Breckenridge, CO
Introduction | Attractions and Activities | Travel Basics
The Town of Breckenridge was established in January 1860, and became a popular gold mining town with the discovery of Colorado's largest nugget, "Tom's Baby." The post-rush era was hard, and the town nearly disappeared. A few determined citizens managed to maintain the little town until December 13, 1961, when a Wichita, Kansas company opened the first ski runs on Peak 8. The rest, as they say, is history. But, oh, don't you wish you could still ski Peak 8 for only $4 a day! Today Breckenridge is considered the 'Perfect Ski Town,' and people from all over the world flock to its slopes and the quaint historic town. It is close to Denver, making transportation a snap, and the town provides activities to suit any taste and temperament, every season of the year. The Riverwalk Center is home to two orchestras and hosts a two-month summer classical concert series (the Breckenridge Music Festival) and the winter International Snow Sculpture Championships. Spring and Fall are busy there, too. Still, many here live for winter's light, soft snow and its skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, helicopter skiing, and apres-ski entertainment. Come join the fun and find your own "Rocky Mountain High." |
