Introduction | Attractions and Activities | Travel Basics

The Monterey Peninsula is one of the most beautiful vacation spots in the world. Despite its small size, it is home to the cities of Monterey, Carmel and Pacific Grove.

Monterey was the capital of the Spanish territory of California, and the first capital of the State of California. It is the home of Steinbeck's Cannery Row, of Old Fisherman's Wharf, and the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The quaint, forested village of Carmel boasts fairy-tale cottages, hidden courtyards and award-winning gardens, as well as its world-famous white sand beach and sculptured cypress groves. Nearby is historic Carmel Mission, built by Father Junipero Serra in 1771, and one of only two Basilicas on the west coast.

Pacific Grove is both the "last American Hometown" and "Butterfly Town USA." Its beautiful coastline complements its neighborhoods of old Victorians, many of which display plaques engraved with the names of the original owners and the home's construction date.

The Monterey Peninsula is also home to Pebble Beach, with its internationally renowned golf course, where the US Open and the annual Pro-Am are based. The community hosts the annual Concours d'Elegance, one of the most prestigious showcases of the world's finest classic automobiles. Its stunning coastline includes Cypress Rock, Bird Rock, and the Lone Cypress, one of the most photographed landmarks on the California coast.

The beauty of the Monterey Peninsula will be a tonic for your soul, just as it has for the photographers and writers who have found their inspiration here. Plan to visit these beautiful and awesome spots.
