Colorado, CO
Activities:
There's much more to do in Colorado besides winter sports. Colorado's snowmelts form beautiful reservoirs thousands of feet above sea level. The boating here comes with sweeping mountain vistas unlike anything you'll find in lower elevations. Some of the largest reservoirs, such as Blue Mesa, Granby, and Dillon, have marinas with sailboat rentals; others offer both boating and camping. Twenty-eight state parks include lakes suitable for boating, and several dozen other state and federal recreation areas are open to the public. Eastern Colorado's prairies and giant cottonwood trees surround its reservoirs.
Water sports are as popular here in summer as winter sports are in winter. The fishing is excellent, too, with a wide variety of food and game species available.
When your muscles need a break from all the activities, head for one of Colorado's many hot springs, with temperatures ranging from a tepid 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) to a searing 181 degrees Fahrenheit (82.78 degrees Celsius). Indians, pioneers, miners and visitors have all enjoyed these windows into the center of the earth.

Attractions:
Colorado is filled with ghost towns. Some still have buildings; some just have foundations; and some have nothing at all. Most are accessible by car or four-wheel-drive vehicle. Besides Aspen, some of the major ones are Buskskin Joe Frontier Town and Railway, Caon City; Pikes Peak Ghost Town, Colorado Springs; Route of the Silver King's, Leadville; and Nathrop.
Gold and silver towns are also popular, reflecting the Victorian architecture and enterprising spirit of their 19th century origins. The most popular ones are at Aspen, Leadville, Breckenridge, Silver Plume, Central City/Black Hawk, Idaho Springs, Georgetown/Silver Plume, Fairplay, Cripple Creek/Victor, Lake City, Telluride, Creede, and Silverton.
Historic sites are located at Camp Hale (north of Leadville), Healey House/Dexter Cabin (Leadville), Centennial Village (Greeley), Fort Vasquez (south of Greeley), Burlington Old Town (Burlington), the Molly Brown and Byers-Evans houses (Denver), Buffalo Bill's Grave (Golden), Bents Old Fort (La Junta), Baca-Bloom Mansion (Trinidad), South Park City (Fairplay), Miramont Castle (Manitou Springs), Pikes Stockade (Fort Garland), and Fort Uncompahgre (Delta).

Landmarks:
The pueblos of southwestern Colorado are among the most ancient in the US. Many villages, roads, and irrigations systems left by these early settlers date back to the 9th century. This ancient civilization, commonly referred to as the Anasazi (the ancient ones), flourished here. What caused them to disappear is still a mystery. Sites are located at:
- Anasazi Heritage Center (Dolores)
- Chimney Rock (near Pagosa)
- Crow Canyon Archaeological Area (Cortez)
- Hovensweep National Monument (northwest of Cortez)
- Mesa Verde National Park
- Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park (Towoac)
Even more mysterious are the Ogam-like writings resembling Celtic inscriptions found in the southeastern part of the state, near Springfield. Found at Comanche National Grasslands' Picture Canyon, these catch the sun only six days a year, at the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.
